Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) is a celebrated American poet, novelist and literary critic during 19th Romantic Period. In the field of American literature, Allan Poe is one of the most controversial and legendary writers. For a long time, he has always been treated as playing a minor role on the margin in the literary history. Emerson considers him as “a jingle man”; Henry James holds that his works are “with a strong literary technique and glowing appearance, but without real thought and profound meaning”. (Meyer, 1992: 271) And in an article The Significance of Edgar Poe in 1880, Whitman maintains that his works belong to “the light of imaginative literature, bright and dazzling, but without the heat”. (Clarke, 1991: 207) But the famous French symbolist poet Baudelaire admires and worships him for his outstanding writings. Edgar Allan Poe himself seems to predict that he cannot find one who can really understand and appreciate his works in his age and says that “I don’t care that my stories are read by contemporary people or people of next generations. I can spend a century on waiting for readers.”
