Abstract

Tender is the Night is one of F. scott Fitzgerald’s most famous masterpieces, which is regarded as the last elegy of the Jazz Age. F. scott Fitzgerald describes a typical Jazz Age which is filled of hedonism in this novel. He aims at exploring the Jazz Age’s features and analyzes the weaknesses of characters in this novel. In this period of time, people try to use fabulous but not practical illusions to satisfy themselves. There is no doubt that they will lose themselves finally in this decayed society. Dick and Nicole are the typical cases of them. Their Morbid life style: demoralization, nervous breakdown, money worship and alcoholism highlight the decayed souls of the Jazz Age’s citizens. Therefore, this paper will expose the spiritual crisis of the Jazz Age from four different aspects.

1. Introduction
1.1 Introduction of the Jazz Age
Generally speaking, Jazz Age ranged from the ending of the World War One (1918) to the Great Depression (1929) in American history. During the World War One, America won a big profit and this profit made a great benefit to American society. It entered into a prosperous period gradually. In the view of Fitzgerald: “A new generation dedicated more than the last to the fear of poverty and the worship of success; grown up to find all Gods dead, all wars fought, all faiths in man shaken.”(This Side of Paradise, 1920) There was no doubt that it was a prosperous age which was full of fortune, spree and desire. Citizens were busy taking part in various parties and feasts. What’s more, this nation’s traditional values also changed in a soaring speed. Indulging in excessive entertainments, people lost their dreams and ambitions. They became a number of alcoholism and broke the law after excessive drinking. They chose to escape from the real society and immersed themselves in a prosperously illusionary society. Purposelessness, decadence and soul emptiness became the symbols of this history.
