A Research on the Loss of Inflectional Affixes in English Nouns
- a case study of college students' English speaking
Abstract
Selective fossilization of noun inflectional affixes always occurs in the course of Chinese learners’ second language acquisition. This paper, firstly, based on two dialogues about campus love and spring festival, gives a research on the loss of noun inflectional affixes from the perspectives of singular and plurality, nouns genitive, agreement with nouns in non-English majors’ oral English practice. Secondly, it analyzes the reasons for why the phenomenon comes into being. Lastly, it proposes some solutions on how to reduce the occurrence of this phenomenon in order to help English learners improve their levels of spoken English.
