Abstract: Vocabulary is the basis of the language, which is one of the three elements of the language. Without words, the language will lose its meaning. English vocabulary teaching is the core of English teaching in the senior school and it is very difficult. The new teaching materials of English are added more words and phrases than before in senior school. Therefore, it is rather difficult for the students to memorize the words and phrases. And the students still use the old and inefficient ways to learn and memorize them. Besides, part of the English teachers’ teaching philosophy fall behind the developing trend of the new teaching materials, lacking the necessary guidance when the students memorize words and in learning. In this paper, the author has analyzed the problems in the vocabulary teaching by referring to the questionnaires, interviews and analysis of the data. And she also offers appropriate teaching strategies and recommendations on how to employ the effective vocabulary teaching.

摘要:词汇是语言的基础,是语言的三大要素之一,离开词汇,语言就失去了实际意义。英语的词汇教学是中学英语教学的核心和难点。高中英语新教材词汇量大大增加,学生记忆单词有很大的困难,仍然用陈旧低效的方法去学去记。部分英语教师的教学理念落后于新教材的发展趋势,在学生学习、记忆单词方面缺乏必要的指导。本文通过问卷调查访谈和数据分析,分析了目前的高中英语词汇教学的问题,并针对如何有效进行词汇教学,提出了相应的教学策略及建议。

Vocabulary teaching is a basic part of English teaching. Wilkins pointed out that “Without grammar, we just only can express a little, but without vocabulary, we can’t express anything.”(Thornbury, 2003: 13). This sentence illustrates very vividly the important role of vocabulary in the comprehensive use in English. But for the majority of the Chinese English learners, vocabulary learning is one of the biggest obstacles to learn English and there are more and more learners aware of this matter. Both the direct teaching method and the audio-visual method stress the importance of the grammar. To avoid the vocabulary teaching influences the teaching of the grammar, so the amount of the vocabulary is controlled in a small range during English teaching.
