A Comparative Analysis on the Interpreting Quality between Two Types of Double Majors

摘要

经济社会的蓬勃催生了复合型人才的出现及发展,另一方面,经济社会的进一步发展也有越来越赖于复合型人才的成长。高校作为输送人才的最主要源地,其培养复合型人才的目标主要是通过设置双学位课程来实现的。本研究调查了高校中两类复合型人才,即英语专业辅修经管类专业与经管类专业辅修英语这两类辅修了第二专业的学生的口译水平及差异。本研究通过开展模拟商务洽谈获得研究数据。本研究基于现下已有的研究,设定了译文内容的准确度(整体的可理解程度)、完成口译的流利度(时间变量)、专业词汇翻译的准确度这三个标准作为实验对象英语口译水平的评估参数。

研究结果显示,英语专业学生在口译的过程中,在把握整体准确度、流利度方面有着较经管类专业学生更为出色的表现,在口译过程中能够更好地把握整体方向,使得洽谈双方能够更好地实现交流目的。会计专业的同学则在口译过程中对专业词汇的翻译表现更佳,对长词、难词有更好的把握,突显了商务洽谈的专业性和较高水准。因此,高校在设置双学位课程时,应在把提高口译能力放在培养突出位置的同时,根据不同专业学生的口译特征突出教学重点,并增加各类模拟口译实战活动,鼓励学生通过实践提高口译水平。

Abstract

China’s economic and social booming has generated the idea and popularity of talents with compound abilities. From another aspect, the further prosperity of the country is now becoming more and more dependent on the cultivation and development of this kind of talents. As the major bases transporting talents to the society, colleges and universities adopt the talents cultivating mechanism of double majors as the principal method to reach the objective of talents cultivation and meet social need for talents. The study intends to investigate and compare the interpreting quality of two types of double majors which refer to multiple foreign language talents and business talents with interpreting skills. In this study, a model business negotiation is set to collect original data which will be later analyzed through three parameters, namely the degree of accuracy which is on the basis of the overall effect of the interpretation, the fluency of the the interpreting which is judged by the length of the time used by the experimental subjects, and the degree of accuracy of specialized vocabulary.

Results showed that English majors have better performance than students from School of Economics & Management (SEM) in overall accuracy and fluency so that they are more excellent in realizing the purpose of communication during the business negotiation. However, students from SEM show their strong points in interpreting specialized vocabulary such as long words and difficult terms which make their interpretation be of better professionalization and higher level. Therefore,colleges and universities should not only focus on perfecting the curriculum settings but also emphasize the teaching method and content of dual degree on the basis of the characteristics of different types of talents. Besides, various interpreting activities should also be implemented to encourage students to improve their interpreting skills.
