Text World Theory, Real Readers and Emotional Response to The Dress

摘要

二十一世纪以来,文学分析领域发生巨大变化。随着认知科学研究成果逐渐与文学分析相融合,认知诗学等一些新理论渐渐崛起,成为当前文学分析的热门话题。这也导致了文学分析的方法重心从以文本为主或者以认知为主向文本分析与读者反应研究相结合转变。本文的主要目的是探究认知诗学作为文学分析理论的阐释力,并且运用认知诗学方法讨论读者对文本的反应。本文具体应用文本世界理论以及共鸣理论作为文章的理论框架,讨论并阐释叙事诗歌《吊带裙》,从而探讨文本中能够吸引读者的元素,以及读者对这些元素的情感反应。最后,文章展现了文本世界理论作为一种认知诗学方法的阐释力,并且解答了读者对文本的情感反应的系列问题:1)在阅读中,读者最关注的文本元素是文本世界中构成世界以及推动世界发展的关键元素,也即共鸣模型中的“吸引元素”;2)读者对于文本的理解和阐释,大多数来自于文本本身,背景知识的增减对之的影响其次;3)读者会对文本中与语境相联系的有特定甚至强烈语义的元素产生情感反应。

Abstract

Great changes have taken place in the field of literature studies in 21st century, especially the methodologies of stylistic study. Since the cognitive science has been introduced into the field of literature study, new literary study methods like cognitive poetics develop rapidly, which leads to a shift of the focus of literary study, from mere text-driven analysis or cognitive-focused interpretation to the integration of a text analysis and reader response study. This thesis intended to investigate the values of explanatory power of cognitive poetics and examine further on readers’ response to text through cognitive poetic methods. Specifically, this article draws on Text World Theory as a methodology to discuss a narrative poem The Dress, so as to find out what text features catch readers’ attention and how they respond to them. Special focus will also be given on the resonance analysis, a method to examine texture. Finally, it makes a conclusion on the justification of the interpreting power of text world theory relating to reader response and how readers respond to specific features in the text: 1) In the reading, readers may probably focus more on the features that help build the text world or are called ‘attractors’ in the resonance term. 2) Readers may react to the text based more on the understanding of the text itself than the background knowledge of the work. 3) Readers tend to respond emotionally to the text world pushers or attractors that represent strong semantic meaning or author’s emotion.
