A Study on the High School Students' Extracurricular Reading

摘要

众所周知，阅读是语言习得过程中重要的一个部分, 在学生英语学习中起着不容忽视的作用。但课内的时间毕竟有限，课外阅读就显得尤为重要。因此，如何提高学生的阅读能力，以及如何最大限度地发挥课外阅读在高中生英语语言学习中的作用受到了极大的关注。

为了进一步了解高中学生课外阅读的情况，本论文对苏州工业园区第二高级中学高一、高二的学生进行了问卷调查。调查内容主要包括学生对课外英语阅读的态度、课外阅读材料的选择、学生进行课外阅读的目的以及在课外阅读上花费的时间、学生在课外阅读中运用的阅读方法及策略、教师在学生课外阅读过程中应发挥的作用、以及学生在课外阅读遇到的障碍等七个方面。

根据问卷调查的结果，本研究发现目前高中生的课外阅读的整体情况不容乐观，并且存在着一些问题与不足之处。其主要表现为高中生课外阅读时间不足，课外阅读材料不适用，缺乏一定的课外阅读技巧等问题。针对调查中发现的不足之处与问题，作者提出了一些相应的建议从而希望能改善高中生课外阅读的情况。

Abstract

It is commonly acknowledged that reading, as a vital part in the process of the acquisition of a foreign language, plays a vital role in students' English learning. As the time in class is limited, extracurricular reading undoubtedly counts for a lot, which can help improve their English proficiency. In consequence, much concern has been given to such questions as how to improve students' reading ability and how to make full use of the role of English extracurricular reading in students' English learning. 

This paper is aimed to make an insight into the current situation of high school students' English extracurricular reading through questionnaire. The questionnaire involves 133 high school students of grade one and grade two from Senior High School as participants. The questionnaire mainly focuses on seven topics: the attitudes students hold towards English extracurricular reading, choices of English extracurricular reading materials, students' purposes of English extracurricular reading and the amount of students' reading time, reading methods and strategies students employed in English extracurricular reading, as well as teachers' role in students' English extracurricular reading and the impediments students are confronted with in the process of English extracurricular reading. 

The study, in accordance with the results of the questionnaires, arrives at a conclusion that high school students' current situation of English extracurricular reading is not optimistic. There are some problems and shortcomings existing in English extracurricular reading of high school students, such as insufficient reading time, inappropriate reading materials, lack of appropriate reading strategies and methods and so on. On basis of these statistics, the author comes up with some suggestions to improve the situation of high school students' English extracurricular reading.
