Abstract

Time has witnessed the improvement of women’s social status and the development of feminism. However, from late 18th century to the early 19thcentury, people in Europe held different views on marriages. With humor, Jane criticized the upper class in this work, Jane told us the love and marriages in the middle class through frequently satirizing snobs, which is different from other novel’s ordinary writing method, making the whole novel and every role valid. Pride and Prejudice written by Jane Austin depicts the issues of marriages of Charlotte Lucas, Lydia Bennet, Jane Bennet and Elizabeth Bennet respectively in the society of the landed gentry of early 19th-century England. it is about five daughters in Mr Bennet who are not in the upper class. The matrimony basis is various: Jane’s marriage is built on similar personality; Charlotte’s is bred by wealth; Lydia’s based on lust; Elizabeth’s is grown from mutual understanding. From the description of four kinds of attitudes toward marriage, Jane proposes her attitude toward marriage: the foundation of a sound marriage is love, mutual respect, and honesty. In this novel, Elizabeth has different ideas towards money and relatives, she did not yield to any marriage no matter how rich the people is or because of his privileged family. She looked high of her love with her elder sister, even higher than her love with Darcy. She is a great women who has her own life controlled by herself. Feminism is showed in Pride and prejudice frequently. Through the research of feminism, women in modern society could be more independent and with the initiative in ones’s own hand.

1 Introduction
From late 18th century to early 19th century, the development of female literature in Britain sped up. As supporter of feminism in that era, Jane Austin portrayed a heroine character--Elizabeth who has the rebellious spirit in the Pride and Prejudice. In this novel, we can summarize the independent personality and equal rights Jane Austin asserted of female through four different marriages. She claimed that women were not appendage to men and that women should earn their bread by the sweat of their brow, which contributed to the process of feminism development.
