Abstract:
As the most famous work of Washington Irving, Rip Van Winkle is definitely a great and contributing writing in literature and human culture. This tale is a landmark in American Romanticism and forerunner of American imagination. With the development of society and culture, women are playing a more and more important role in every aspect. Feminism, as the producer of women's acquirement and social progress, is attracting more and more attention and discussion. Feminism was needed in the past and is still valid at present, and it is necessary in practice and indispensible in literature. In recent years, some critics and feminists have started to discuss Rip Van Winkle from the viewpoint of feminism and made several interesting and thought-provoking conclusions. Based on the previous research on this tale, the paper tries to interpret it from feminist literary theory and feminist literary criticism. It is generally believed that Rip goes into the forest to escape from his wife. But from my perspective, what leads to Rip's adventure is his characters rather than the impact of external factors. He wants to get away from the responsibility of his family. Rip is described as a good-natured, hen-pecked man. His wife is the commander of him and his family. However, it is Dame Van Winkle, not Rip, that becomes the most tragic role in the whole story. The portrayal of Dame is unfair though the author cannot identify with her. To some extent, Dame's termagancy is partly aroused by her husband's laziness and carelessness. As for Rip, there are always reasonable explanations for his irresponsibility. These differences in the portrayals of men and women in this sketch at least illustrate that the representation of women is incorrect.
