Abstract
Frankenstein, the master piece of Marry Shelley, is the first science fiction novel in the world, having a profound influence both in the science fiction field and gothic field. It tells a story about how a monster created by the scientist Frankenstein desires to be accepted by the human-being but takes revenge on the human world in the end.
This thesis makes an analysis of the reasons why the monster finally resists the whole human world. It argues that the cause of putting the monster in a dilemma is the contradictoriness of his identity. The thesis firstly looks into the three phases the monster has experienced during the process of questing for his identity: desiring for the identity as a member of human society, being confused and feeling loss of his identity and accepting his identity as being a fiend in the end. Then it points out that the cause of it should be owed to the contradictoriness of his identity, by analyzing the two key factors: the name and the acquisition of human’s language and knowledge. After that the thesis moves to illustrate that the monster is a reflection of the same kind of people in the world. The paper ends with the conclusion that the cause of the monster’s dilemma and the tragedy in the end is the contradictoriness and the loss of monster’s identity and this contradictoriness can also be reflected on the similar kind of people in the society.
The result of this thesis will be a necessary supplement to the researches of Frankenstein and be able to provide some references for researches of humanity and people’s psychology.
