Abstract:

Jane Austen is a famous writer in Britain in the early nineteenth century. She writes Sense and Sensibility. This paper is aimed to analyze the changes of Marianne’s female consciousness embodied in the novel and the reasons for her change. In the novel, the growth of Marianne’s female consciousness is particularly obvious. She is born to be a romanticist and she dares to express her feelings towards others. Besides, she is willing to pursue her true love. However, under the influence of social forces and marital values and due to her gradual maturity, she gradually turns into a rational woman. Her growth in female consciousness shows that women should recognize themselves properly and treat others fairly. When sense and sensibility meet, women should manage sense to control sensibility to realize self-improvement.

Key words: Sense and Sensibility, Marianne, Female Consciousness

1. Introduction
Jane Austen is a well-known English novelist who is famous for her romantic fiction, and that earns her a place as one of the most widely read writers in English literature. Jane Austen remains as popular as ever and is revered as much as any literary figure in the history of the English language.
Jane Austen was educated originally by her father and her older brothers as well as through her own reading. The steadfast support of her family was very critical to her development as a professional writer. Her artistic apprenticeship lasted from her teenage years until she was about 35 years old. During this period, she experimented with various literary forms, including the epistolary novel, but she abandoned this style later. Her work brought her little personal fame and only a few positive reviews during her lifetime, but the publication in 1869 of her nephew's A Memoir of Jane Austen introduced her to a wider public, and by the 1940s she had become widely accepted in academia as a great English writer. The second half of the 20th century saw a proliferation of Austen scholarship and the emergence of a Janeite fan culture. In general, Jane Austen’s works exerted great influence on a lot of people until today.
