Abstract: The Chinese American female writer Amy Tan plays an important role in the development of Chinese-American literature, and the theme of her works never deviates from the family history of Chinese immigrants. The Bonesetter’s Daughter is her fourth and the most autobiographical novel. It best displays the mother-daughter relationships. Thus, the paper will analyze the mother-daughter conflicts of a Chinese immigrant family and the experience they suffered as an “other” of patriarchy and mainstream culture from postcolonial feminist perspective. And it will also try to find out how they recognize their identities, remit contradictions, overcome identity anxiety and realize self-identification. What’s more, it will reflect the understanding and identification between Chinese traditional culture and American modern civilization, orient faith and occidental value.
Key word: Amy Tan, mother-daughter relationship, the other, identity anxiety, self-identification
