Abstract
                     
    The Mark on the Wall, is the first creation of the consciousness stream by the famous novelist Virginia Woolf. It describes the protagonist’s chain of illusions which emerged when she saw the mark on the wall momentarily. While The Dead, one of James Joyce’s famous consciousness-stream novels, depicts the process in which a complacent Irish intellectual, losing himself at a snowy night, finally achieved self-recognition and Epiphany. Domestic studies mainly adopt socio-historic perspective to analyze the consciousness-stream works, but with little efforts on comparative study of different novels of the same kind; while studies abroad focus more on the symbolic analysis. Therefore, this thesis aims to make a comparative study of the writing techniques of the two novels, The Mark on the Wall and The Dead, to reveal the formation and flowing of the major characters’ consciousness in terms of four aspects, so as to further explore the themes of the novels and the images of the characters. The four aspects include the Epiphany and Moments of Being, the Internal Soliloquy, the Montage Narration, and Free Association.
This thesis falls into three parts. The first part briefly introduces the two novels, and life experiences of Virginia Woolf and James Joyce, as well as the status quo of the studies concerned home and abroad. The second part focuses on the comparative analysis of the writing techniques and the aesthetic features of the two novels. The third part concludes the similarities and distinctive features of the writing techniques of the two novels, thus further revealing the themes and the images of major characters in the two novels.

摘  要

《墙上的斑点》是著名作家佛吉尼亚•伍尔夫首部用“意识流”手法创作的小说,该作品描写了主人公在平常瞬间看到墙上斑点所产生的一系列幻觉与遐想。詹姆斯•乔伊斯的著名意识流小说《死者》则讲述了一爱尔兰位知识分子在雪夜从沾沾自喜走向自我否定,再到最后认识真我,从而获得精神顿悟的过程。国内对于意识流作品的研究主要是从社会历史背景的角度来分析这一类作品,较少将同类作品进行对比研究;国外则侧重从象征主义角度对这类作品进行研究。而本文则主要通过对比分析两部作品的创作手法,从四个方面揭示作品中人物意识的形成及其流动,包括“精神顿悟”与“重要瞬间”、内心独白的叙述方式、蒙太奇叙述结构,以及自由联想,从而更深刻全面地理解作品主题和人物形象。
本文分为三部分:第一部分对这两部作品及弗吉尼亚•伍尔夫和詹姆斯•乔伊斯生平做简要介绍,并简述意识流作品国内外研究现状;第二部分通过文本分析对两部作品所采用的意识流创作手法进行全面对比,并解读这两部作品的艺术特色;第三部分,对两位意识流大师的创作手法异同及特点进行总结,从而更深入揭示两部作品的人物形象及主题。
