Abstract: Context plays a vital role in linguistic studies and it has become the necessary condition of understanding and translating word meanings. During these years' English study, I found that students are unable to grasp the exact meaning of words because they ignore the context. To a great extent, this will block English learning. In order to solve this problem, I decide to conduct this research. The topic I chose can help English majors to know the relation between context and meanings better and to pick out the most appropriate meaning in communication or translation. In my research, I analyze in depth the three kinds of context: linguistic context, situational context and cultural context. Finally I figure out that in our everyday life it’s hard to communicate without the actual context. Word meaning and context are like the chopsticks. They need to coordinate mutually. This paper will give some suggestions to English learners and help English learners to understand word meanings more efficiently.

摘要：语境在语言学研究中起着关键作用，并且是理解和翻译词义的必要条件。在多年的英语学习中我发现越来越多的学生由于忽略语境而无法准确理解词义。从很大程度上来说这影响了同学们的英语发展，为了能更好的解决这个问题，我决定展开本次研究。我所选的课题能帮助英语专业的学生更好的了解语境和词义两者的关系，从而挑选出最为恰当的语义。在本次研究中，我重点深入分析了三种语境，及语言语境，情景语境和文化语境。最后我发现日常生活中的交流离不开语境，语境和词义就像一双筷子一样需要相互的配合。希望本次课题能帮助英语学习者更有效的理解词义。

Context is an important tool in understanding and translating word meanings, and it has become the necessary condition of understanding and translating word meaning. During these years' English study, I found that more and more students fail to grasp the exact word meanings because they ignore the context. To a great extent, this will block the development of English learning. In order to solve this problem, I decided to go into this research. Besides, we should have a good command of knowledge of cross culture and background information so as to grasp the correct meaning from the context well. The topic I chose can help English majors to know the relation between context and meanings better and to pick out the most appropriate meaning in communication or translation.
