艾米丽.勃朗特在《呼啸山庄》运用了象征主义的艺术手法，通过一系列人物形象和环境意象来象征文明和自然。随着人物关系和地理环境地位变化，自然和文明在故事中经历了三次不同情形的冲突，最终达到融合。本文意在通过分析作品中文明和自然的代表意象及其关系变化来展现文明和自然的冲突和融合，揭示文明和自然从冲突发展到融合的这一过程。

Abstract:

Emily Bronte has applied the artistic symbolism to Wuthering Heights, and symbolized nature and cultivation with a series of images of characterization and geographical positions. Through the development of the relationship among the characters and the status changing of geographical positions, nature and cultivation has experienced three conflicts of different modes, and reaches a unity eventually in the story. This paper mainly intends to show the symbolism of the conflicts and unity between nature and cultivation in Wuthering Heights by analyzing the symbolic elements and the developing relationship of nature and cultivation. And disclose the developing process of conflicts to unity between nature and civilization.

1.    Introduction
 Wuthering Heights was Emily Bronte's only novel. Since its publication in 1847, various critics have made different comments on this work. Some say it is a great and unique work which can give the reader strength, but others maintain it is a terrible book which may cause mental disturbance. Those who are in favor of the novel praise its outstanding rebellious spirit, but those who are against it criticize its inhuman cruelty. [1]21Yet the fact remains that this mysterious novel has occupied a very important position in English literature. Wuthering Heights has launched several waves of studies and attractive more and more attention in the past decades from home and abroad. It is certainly one of the most extraordinary books which genius has ever produced. As the studies have advanced, we have been increasingly surprised by the writers' talent. Emily is a realist, and he novel is a despairing cry from Emily by life itself. It is the life of mid-Victorian England, experienced by “a girl of passion and imagination”. [2]2
Emily has endowed the romantic story with great social significance, expressing her own view towards life by symbolism, theme and structure. The novel has been studied, analyzed, dissected, and discussed from every imaginable critical perspective, yet it remains unexhausted. [3]42However, the symbolism of conflicts and unity between nature and cultivation is one of the most worth-studying themes, which will be mainly analyzed in this paper.
