Abstract: The language plays a very important role in the social life and the selection of the words reflects the users’ cultural background, attitude and ideology. In the process of the human social development, the male almost always takes the dominant position, so the phenomenon of sexism exists in society. From the perspective of English vocabulary and taking some relevant linguistic theories as supporting materials, this paper attempts to make an analysis of sexism in English vocabulary. There are six parts in this paper. The first part serves as an introduction of sexism phenomenon in English and gives the significance of this topic and the second part reviews several related researches done by some famous scholars. In third part，the paper carefully analyses the sexism in English vocabulary from morphologic aspect, semantic aspect, metaphoric aspect and other aspects. The fourth part explores the causes of this phenomenon of discrimination against females. The fifth part makes some suggestions in order to change the sexism phenomenon and the last part draws a conclusion of this paper. People can get a deeper comprehension of English language through the analysis on the phenomenon of sexism. And for the English learners in China, it is important to understand these special English words and avoid using the sexist language which is out of the respect to the female and we hope to achieve the goal of getting a better communication in daily life.

摘  要：语言在社会生活中处于十分重要的地位, 语言的选择反映着语言使用者的文化背景、态度及思想意识。由于在人类社会发展历程中男性大多占据着主导地位，因此性别歧视现象也普遍地存在于社会中。本文从英语词汇的角度出发，借用语言学的相关理论知识，探讨了英语词汇中的性别歧视现象。本文分为六个部分：第一部分，首先介绍了英语中的性别歧视现象以及论文选题的意义。第二部分介绍国内外前人对这一领域的研究成果。第三部分从形态学、语义学、隐喻和其他几个方面对英语中的性别歧视现象进行了详尽的分析。第四部分，论文分析了这种性别歧视现象形成的原因。第五部分，通过探讨得出了几种改变英语词汇中性别歧视的策略。最后是总结。通过研究英语词汇中的性别歧视现象，人们可以更加全面深刻地理解英语这门语言，而且对中国的英语学习者来说，了解这些特殊的英语词汇并出于对女性的尊重尽力避免使用性别歧视语是很重要的，这能帮助我们更好地与人交际。

Language is the substance of social life and personal relationships. Language is the vehicle, through which human beings express their ideas, thoughts, attitudes and beliefs, even hopes and dreams. Language itself is not sexist, but the society is. The social sexism is transferred to language by human beings, and at the same time, sexist and insulting words may reinforce biased views, and changes in the society may be reflected. So language is not only a guide, it is even a mirror that reflects the sexism in social reality, and at the same time, it makes people see the social reality more clearly.
