Abstract:

George Orwell’s masterpiece 1984 is often seen as a political allegory which is against Utopia, the Soviet Union and totalitarianism. This work mainly focuses on the hero Winston’s inner struggle and his thinking of history and humanity itself. Apart from this, the description of heroine Julia is also very important. From her description we can infer the resistant characteristics of females under the pressure of totalitarianism. This paper mainly analyzes the similarities and differences of hero and heroine in 1984 in the light of anti-totalitarianism and the reasons for these. What’s more, the paper also discusses the humanistic care behind the totalitarian society and draws some lessons from the tragedy of hero and heroine. In this way we hope that we can have a better understanding of the theme and deep meaning of 1984.

1 Introduction
George Orwell is not only an unique novelist but also a progressive political prophet, who plays a very important role in English literature. His famous novel 1984 is a typical one.
But it must be pointed that George Orwell is not just a novelist who objects to the Soviet Union and 1984 is not just a work which opposes the Soviet Union. In realistic life, George Orwell pays little attention to the female and even looks down upon them. He thinks that woman is a part of substantial world which man should conquer, like the fortune and position. It can be reflected from this novel. The novel gives all the lurid details of totalitarianism. Different from the Utopia, the world created by totalitarianism is full of dread, treason and torment. In this world, no love is allowed except the love for the Big Brother. The story mainly tells that in a grim city of a terrifying country, where the Big Brother is always watching you and thought police can practically read your mind, Winston is a man in grave danger for the simple reason that his memory still functions. He knows clearly that the Party controls the people by feeding them lies and narrowing their imaginations through a process of bewilderment and brutalization which alienates each individual from his fellows and deprives him of pursuit of freedom. Drawn into a forbidden love affair with Julia, Winston finds the courage to join a secret revolutionary organization called the Brotherhood, dedicated to the destruction of the Party. Together with his beloved Julia, he hazards his life in a deadly match against the powers. This paper mainly analyzes the similarities and differences of hero and heroine in 1984 in terms of anti-totalitarianism and the reasons for these. In addition, it also explores the humanistic care behind the totalitarian society and draws some lessons from the tragedy of hero and heroine.
