威廉•萨默塞特•毛姆是英国著名的小说家、剧作家。代表作有戏剧《圈子》，《人生的枷锁》、《月亮和六便士》等。毛姆的人生经历使他非常关注人性。毛姆创作时坚持客观、冷静和不评判的态度，加之其作品特有的浓郁异国情调，将人性的复杂性描述得淋漓尽致，表达了对人性的关注和对社会的关心，

毛姆在《月亮与六便士》中深入探讨了生活和艺术两者的矛盾和相互作用，并且关注人性，成为20世纪的流行小说。毛姆的这部小说问世后，以情节入胜、文字深刻在文坛轰动一时，人们争相传看。这篇小说的原型是法国印象派画家高更，这更增加了它的传奇色彩，受到了全世界读者的关注。

月亮代表我们毕生想要追求的理想，六便士代表现实。本文运用美丑对照原则对比主人公和其他人物的性格，通过对比，突出斯特里克兰德性格的多样化，从世俗眼光看他是“丑”的，而从对理想的追求来说，他又是绝对的“美”。这种对照深刻地揭示了该如何正确看待人性。
