Abstract

Margaret Atwood is known as “Queen of Canadian Literature”. As a productive writer, she has been awarded numerous rewards. Atwood cares for women’s issues, and most of the protagonists in her works are women. Published in 1981, Bodily Harm is one of the typical examples. This thesis attempts to analyze the novel from the perspective of feminism.
The thesis is divided into four chapters. Chapter one is aimed at introducing Atwood, her novel Bodily Harm and the latest studies about it. Chapter two is about feminism and female’s status in modern society. Chapter three is the backbone of the thesis, specifically analyzing oppressions on women from various aspects and the arousal as well as the resistance of female protagonists. Chapter four is the conclusion, summarizing the main points of the whole thesis.

摘要

玛格丽特•阿特伍德有“加拿大文学女王”之称。作为一名多产的作家,她曾获奖无数。阿特伍德关心妇女问题,她大多数作品的主人翁都是女性。发表于1981年的《肉体伤害》就是其中的典型代表之一。本论文旨从女性主义的角度对这部小说进行详细分析。
本论文由四章组成。第一章主要介绍了阿特伍德、小说《肉体伤害》以及前人的研究成果。第二章是关于女性主义及女性在现代社会中的处境。第三章是论文的主体部分,阐述了小说中的女性所受到的来自各方面的压迫及其所体现出的女性意识的觉醒和反抗精神。第四章是结论部分,主要是对本论文的主要论点进行总结。

1.1 An Introduction to Margaret Atwood
As the Queen of Canadian Literature, Margaret Atwood enjoys a worldwide reputation, which mainly results from her outstanding literary contributions. Atwood is a productive writer as well as one of the twentieth century’s most forceful, innovative poets, novelists, short story writers and so on. She is a winner of the Arthur C. Clarke Award and Prince of Asturias Award for Literature. She has been shortlisted for the Booker Prize five times, winning once, and has been a finalist for the Governor General’s Award several times, winning twice. She is also a co-founder of the Writers’ Trust of Canada, a non-profit literary organization that seeks to encourage Canada’s writing community.
