Abstract:

Khaled Hosseini is an Afghanistan-American author. His works are mainly about the lives of people in his motherland. The Kite Runner is his representative work. This novel has narrated a story about pure friendship between two children as well as the redemption of one of them. Due to the weak personality and selfish character, the protagonist has once hurt his best friend deeply. After that, they get separated from each other. After growing to be an adult, the protagonist is still haunted by the sense of guilt and for many years, he has tries to find the way to redeem himself. Finally he finds it and fulfills his redemption and gets spiritual growth. This paper will focus on analyzing the characters of protagonist in different periods and how these characters impact on his behaviors and the causes of the tragedy. Then the reasons, that promote the author’s growth, will be analyzed, especially the important people in the protagonist’s life. Khaled Hosseini wants to enlighten readers about the correct way to face one’s faults in this story. This paper has also presented this theme through analysis and research.

1. Introduction
1.1. An Introduction of the Story of The Kite Runner
The novel The Kite Runner has narrated a story about pure friendship between two children as well as the redemption of one of them. The story takes place in Afghanistan, the motherland of the author Khaled Hoseini. Two protagonists Amir and Hassan grow in the same family since childhood. They have cultivated deep friendship. They often play together and take part in the kite competitions. Amir is very good at cutting kite strings and Hassan is an extinguished “kite runner”. So they often cooperate with each other well and win. One day, in a kite competition, Amir successfully cuts all the kite strings. When Hassan is picking up the kites, he meets Assef and his fellows, a villain who despises and hates he and Amir very much. Assef wants to snatch the kites from Hassan. They fight and Hassan is defeated and is raped by Assef. Amir sees the tragedy, but due to his weak character, he dare not stand out to help Hassan. After this accident happens, Amir feels a sense of guilt towards Hassan. Once he lies to his father and frames Hassan in order to make him leave. Amir is regretted after that, but due to his weak character, he keeps silent one again.
