Abstract
To some extent, writing and translation are both parts of cultural transmission. This notion is especially displayed in Moment in Peking. This paper discusses the status of the writer and translators in Moment in Peking in light of identification. Both the writer and the translators shoulder the responsibility of conveying textual meaning and cultural messages. There is a lot of evidence stating that Lin Yutang inserts some of his original ideas which may be formed in Chinese in the first place in the writing of Moment in Peking. And the Chinese versions of both Zhang Zhenyu and Yu Fei present their own understandings and some writing of their own in the translation since they perceive the book in different backgrounds. This is what we call the techniques of self-translation while writing and back-translation while interpreting Chinese culture (which takes an English form) back into the Chinese language. This paper attempts to provide examples of self-translation in the original English version of Moment in Peking. In addition, this paper places much emphasis on the space of creation that back-translation renders to the translator. Through these studies, this paper would further illustrate the identity interaction and exchange between the translators and writer in Moment in Peking and therefore illustrates the possibility of this strategy in translation and writing. And this would lead to the further discussion of what benefits this strategy would bring to translational process and writing process.

文学的创作和翻译在某种程度上都是文化传播的一部分。《京华烟云》是创作和翻译相结合的典范。本论文探讨了林语堂先生在创作《京华烟云》过程中的翻译的角色,又探讨了译者在翻译过程中的创作的角色。《京华烟云》的作者和译者都是中西两方文化的承载者,各种痕迹表明林语堂先生在创作过程中或多或少地融入了自己的中文思维,有着翻译的痕迹;而不管是在张振玉的译本还是郁飞的译本中,译者也都根据自己的时代背景,对文章有自己的理解,从而在翻译的过程中揉入相对的写作的空间。这就是创作的过程中的自译的现象和在把此书从带有中文思维的英语创作品还原成中文过程中的回译现象。本文从林语堂先生的作品《京华烟云》中挖掘了林语堂先生自译的成分;又将从译者的角度出发,研究《京华烟云》从英文翻译成中文过程带给译者的自由发挥创造的空间。通过这些研究进一步阐明《京华烟云》作者与译者身份的互动与漂移,从而深入研究写作名义的自译和回译名义的写作的可能性,研究这种方式对翻译技巧、创作和翻译过程带来的好处。
