摘要

《嘉莉妹妹》是美国自然主义文学大师德莱塞的第一部长篇小说，也是他的杰出代表作之一。《嘉莉妹妹》描写了一个农村女孩嘉莉在为了摆脱贫穷孤身一人来到芝加哥实现自己的“美国梦”的过程中，得到了物质上的满足，但是却迷失在物质的欲望中。这是一个以欲望为主题的小说，本文根据马斯洛需求层次理论，分析嘉莉，杜洛埃和赫斯特伍德三个人在不同时间段的产生的不同的需要和欲望，并分析这些欲望形成的原因。这些欲望的来源包括两个方面，一方面是主人公内在需求的驱使，另一方面是受当时社会背景的的影响。
