The Study of Dialogues in Slumdog Millionaire Under the Framework of Cooperative Principle

摘要

格莱斯的合作原则提出以来一直被学术界推崇为经典语言学理论。为了突出电影主题和收获意外效果，电影会话中经常会出现故意违反合作原则的现象。

本研究选取了一部在第81届奥斯卡电影节上荣获八项大奖的电影《贫民窟的百万富翁》中的对话为研究对象，通过分析影片中违反质的准则、量的准则、关系准则及方式准则的现象，指出这一语言现象收到的意外效果,并在此基础上总结影响电影会话合作原则使用的四大影响因素。本研究在合作原则的框架下研究《贫民窟的百万富翁》中的对话以期使观众更好的解读《贫民窟的百万富翁》。

Abstract

Grice’s cooperative principle has been considered as the classical theory of linguistics since it was put forward. In order to highlight film themes and obtain unexpected effects, dialogues often violate the cooperative principle. 

This paper chooses a well-known movie called Slumdog Millionaire, which won eight awards on the 81st Oscar Awards, as the object of study. The emphasis is laid on the analysis of violation of the four maxims in the dialogues of Slumdog Millionaire. The violation of the principle receives unexpected effect. Simultaneously, four factors which influence the application of the cooperative principle are concluded. They are image, level of education, listener and situation. The study will help audience understand implied meaning of the conversation better.
