Analysis of the Application of Translation Standards and Skills In Science Fiction Folding Beijing

摘要

在中国科幻翻译研究的历程中，郭建中在其著作《科普与科幻翻译——理论、技巧与实践》中提出了关于科幻小说翻译的标准及科幻小说翻译技巧。如今这些翻译标准和技巧被广泛应用于科幻作品的翻译中。本文以《北京折叠》为例，研究郭建中提出的翻译标准及技巧在科幻翻译中的应用。

《北京折叠》是由郝景芳创作、刘宇昆翻译的中短篇科幻小说，并于2016年获得第74届雨果奖最佳中短篇小说奖。在阅读了科幻小说《北京折叠》中文原版及英译本的基础上，本文对其中翻译标准和翻译技巧的应用进行分析。本文首先说明当前科幻小说的定义以及科幻小说翻译的背景。然后根据郭建中教授的科幻小说翻译理论，通过实例分析《北京折叠》的翻译是否符合郭建中的科幻小说翻译标准，以及《北京折叠》中翻译技巧和翻译策略的应用。最后提出应用科幻翻译技巧的意义及影响以及本文的不足之处。

在查阅相关中外文献及知网上相关学术论文的基础上，通过定性分析，本文得出结论，《北京折叠》的英译本符合郭建中关于科幻小说的三个标准，即文学性、科学性和通俗性。《北京折叠》译文中使用了归化、异化等翻译策略，并且在处理具体句子翻译时使用增益法与减词法、分译法与合译法及转译法等技巧以使译文通顺、地道，并尽量还原原文的风格。本文具体分析了《北京折叠》中翻译标准及翻译技巧的应用，但仍有不足之处。当前国内关于科幻翻译的专著较少，本文只选取了郭建中的翻译理论来研究《北京折叠》的翻译，研究较为困难，缺乏与其他翻译理论的对比。

Abstract

In the process of science fiction translation in China, Guo Jianzhong puts forward translation standards and strategies about science fiction translation in his work Translation of Popular Science and Science Fiction: Theories, Strategies and Practice. Nowadays, his translation standards and strategies are widely used in science fiction translation in China. This paper takes the translation of Folding Beijing as an example to discuss the application of Guo Jianzhong’s translation standards and strategies in science fiction translation. 

Folding Beijing, written by Hao Jingfang, translated by Ken Liu, won the “best novelette” of Hugo Award in 2016. Based on the comparison between the source text and translation of Folding Beijing, this paper analyzes the application of translation standards and skills in terms of Guo Jianzhong’s science fiction translation. At first, the definition of science fiction and background of SF translation will be put forward in this paper. Then, the application of SF translation standards, strategies and skills in Folding Beijing will be analyzed through some specific cases. The last part will be the influence of SF translation skills’ application and the insufficient of this paper. 

Through looking up relevant Chinese and foreign monographs and studies, this paper come to a conclusion by means of qualitative analysis: the translation of Folding Beijing conforms to the Guo Jianzhong’s three standards of literariness, Scientificity, and popularity. Foreignization and domestication are used as basic translation strategies in Folding Beijing. Some skills such as amplification and omission, combination and division, and conversion are used when dealing with specific sentence translation in order to make it authentic, smooth, and conform to the original writing style. However, there are still some insufficient in this paper. Lack of relevant monographs makes it difficult to carry on a comparison with other theories.
