Risk Aversion of Fuzzy Language in English Business Correspondence

摘要

随着改革开放进程的加快，我国对外商务交流越来越频繁，作为对外交流的重要工具，英语商务信函一直是语言学、文体学、语用学等方面的研究热点，然而从模糊语的角度探讨商务信函有待于更加深入。本论文旨在探讨在确保模糊语能够在商务英语信函中的发挥积极效应的同时，规避模糊语使用风险的具体对策。

本文首先介绍模糊语的定义及特点；其次，简要介绍商务英语信函的特点及主要功能；再次进一步分析模糊语在商务英语信函中的积极作用和可能存在的风险。模糊语的积极作用在于有利于商务信函达到言辞礼貌、逻辑严密、自我保护的效用。但是，由于在信函的写作中缺乏具体信息，存在文化障碍以及修饰语模糊，英语商务信函可能存在缺乏实效，导致法律争端，造成经济损失的风险。根据以上分析，论文得出结论：通过提高相关从业人员的语用能力并且将模糊语与精确语结合运用，做到扬长避短，能够显著规避商务英语信函中模糊语可能导致的风险。

Abstract

With the acceleration of reform and opening up, China’s foreign business exchanges are more and more frequent. Business English correspondence，as an important tool for foreign business exchanges, has remained a research concern from different aspects, covering linguistics, stylistics, pragmatics, etc. As for the application of fuzzy language in business English correspondence, some issues deserve thorough discussion. This paper aims to explore some ways to avoid some risks of using fuzzy language and to ensure that fuzzy language can play a positive role in English business correspondence.

The paper begins with the definition and characteristics of fuzzy language. Secondly, the paper briefly introduces the features and main functions of English business correspondence. It further analyzes the functions and risks of fuzzy language in English business correspondence. The use of fuzzy language can help achieve politeness, rigorous logic and self-protection in English business correspondence; however, some risks of limited feasibility, legal disputes and economic loss would arise due to lack of specific information, cultural barriers and ambiguous modification. Accordingly, it suggests that risk aversion of fuzzy language in English business correspondences be achieved by improving business personnel’s pragmatic competence and combing accuracy and fuzziness of language.
