摘要

《红字》发表于1850年，是美国作家纳撒尼尔·霍桑的一部杰出的代表作。在这部小说中，霍桑探索了罪责、原罪和宗教迫害等主题。而亚瑟·丁梅斯代尔是这部小说中一位至关重要的人物。本文将结合当时的社会背景和宗教背景，分析主人公亚瑟·丁梅斯代尔各个方面的转变，包括其身份，精神世界以及对他对邪恶看法的转变;探讨他是如何从一名优秀的单身男青年转变为一名父亲，如何从一名受人尊敬的牧师沦为一个“看不见的红字”，及如何战胜自己内心的软弱和怯懦，进行自我救赎,以此来揭示丁梅斯代尔是如何从一名杰出的神职人员转变为一名敢于承认自己错误的平常人。

Abstract

The Scarlet Letter, published in 1850, is an outstanding masterpiece of American writer Nathaniel Hawthorne. Hawthorne explores themes of guilt, sin and religious persecution through this novel. And Arthur Dimmesdale is a crucial character in this book. In this paper, I will combine the social background and religious background to analyze and explore the transformation of Arthur Dimmesdale, including the transformation of his identity, spiritual world and his attitudes towards evil; the process of his transformation from an excellent single man to a father, and from a respectable minister to an invisible scarlet letter, and from weakness as well as cowardice to bravity; to reveal the process how Dimmesdale changes from a distinguished clergyman to an average man who is brave enough to admit his mistakes.
