An Analysis of Gatsby’s Tragedy in The Great Gatsby

摘要

本文主要是通过分析《了不起的盖茨比》中盖茨比悲剧的两个表现：所处时代背景下贫与富的较大差距和自身的贪婪使得自己追寻的美国梦最终以失败告终，阶级的差异和对爱情的盲目追求导致与黛西的爱情破灭。同时分析出盖茨比悲剧形成的两个主要原因：一是盖茨比自身性格存在很多缺点，不切实际，虚荣，自负等性格缺陷都是导致他的梦想与爱情与他的意愿背道而驰。二是盖茨比与当时社会环境，时代背景的不相容，这是他失败的根本原因。最后揭示出盖茨比的悲剧发生的必然性及从中得到的教训。

Abstract

In this paper,the author analyzed the manifestation of Gatsby’s Tragedy in The Great Gatsby: Under the background and current society of a wide gap between rich and poor advanced his dream broken. Differences in class and the blind pursuit of love burned his love with Daisy. What’s more, two main reasons for Gatsby’s tragedy are analyzed: first, Gatsby has many shortcomings of unreality, vanity and conceit, and these character flaws lead the result of his dream and love contrary to his wishes. Second, Gatsby is incompatible with the social environment and historical background, which is the basic reason for his failure. Finally, the inevitability of Gatsby’s tragedy and the value we should learned from Gatsby are discussed.
