Semantic Features of Sentences in Business English Claim Correspondence

摘要

商务英语索赔函的目的是为了促进双方有效解决问题,保持友好的合作关系,获得合理的赔偿,而不是指责和抱怨。本课题以相关教材中抽取的一定数量的索赔函电以及外贸公司中出现的索赔信函为语料,从人称、语气、情态三个方面来分析索赔函电的句法语义特征。研究表明,商务英语索赔函中句子主语多使用it和索赔内容,避免使用第二人称且使用被动句;语气以陈述语气为主以此达到商务索赔的目的;情态方面,商务英语索赔函使用低值情态动词和中值情态动词,且情态隐喻的使用反映了礼貌原则,使索赔语言更加委婉。作者希望通过本文能让人们了解如何运用适当的语言来达到商务索赔的目的,同时给商务英语函电的写作和教学起到一定的现实指导作用。

Abstract

Business English claim correspondence (BECC) is to promote the effective solution to the problem and maintain friendly relations of cooperation, getting reasonable compensation instead of blaming and complaining. This thesis, based on a certain number of BECC selected from related textbooks and foreign business trade companies, focuses on the analysis of semantic features of sentences from its sentence subject, mood and modality. The research shows that it and the contents to be claimed are used as the sentence subject and passive voice is used in order to avoid You-attitude. Declarative is almost the only mood used in BECC to meet its function and purpose. As to modality, Low-value modal verb and middle-value modal verb are suitable for BECC, and the use of modal metaphor reflects politeness principle, which can make the claim language more euphemistic. The author hopes that people can understand how to use the appropriate languages to achieve the purpose of the commercial claim, and also hopes that it can play a guiding role in reality in business English correspondence writing and teaching.
