《汤姆叔叔的小屋》是斯陀夫人（1811-1869）的名作，这部小说写于19世纪50年代，正是浪漫主义兴盛时期，对美国文学向现实主义文学过度产生了深远影响。它的发表成为美国南北战争的导火索之一，并对以林肯为代表的正义一方获得胜利产生了巨大作用，因此该小说当之无愧是一部具有重要政治影响的小说。

本文描述了小说中出现的母爱的本能性。不管她们是什么样的母亲，或黑人或白人，或勇敢或懦弱，或自私或伟大，她们都有着共同点。那就是母爱的本能性。也许，那就是作者想要与读者分享的。

Abstract

Uncle Tom’s Cabin is Mrs. Stowe’s masterpiece. The novel was written in the 1850s and in this period the romantic literature was flourishing. It creates profound influence on American literature development to the realistic literature. It becomes one of the important fuses which brought about the Civil War and prompted the victory of the justice party led by Lincoln.

This thesis mainly discusses the instinct of maternal love lying in the book. No matter what mothers they are, white or black, brave or cowardly, selfish or virtuous, they share the same thing. That’s the instinct of maternal love. Maybe that’s also what the author wants to show to her readers.
