摘要

玛格丽特·德拉布尔的大部分作品围绕母性展开。在父权社会,母性只是女人被当做传宗接代工具时具有的属性，然而德拉布尔认为母性是女人孩子之间良好关系的基础，母性创造人间极乐。随着社会的发展和女性地位的提高，母性会成为女人及她们周边人创造性和快乐的源泉。

每一位母亲，她的行为会对她自己，她的家庭以及社会产生深刻影响。为了说明这一点，德拉布尔常在自己的小说中塑造两种母亲形象，一种是堕落的母亲形象，另一种是接近完美的母亲形象。在德拉布尔的小说《金色的耶路撒冷》中，两种类型的母亲形象分别以毛姆太太和德纳姆太太为代表。

这篇论文分析两类母亲不同的行事方式以及这些行为带来的影响。毛姆太太对待她的家人和邻居，尤其是对待她的女儿冷酷无情造成了她与女儿紧张的关系，还导致了他生活上的孤独可怜。德纳姆太太保持了家庭与事业的平衡，她不仅拥有不错的事业还有一个幸福的家庭。论文表明，女性是可以兼顾家庭和事业的：母亲的狭隘和残酷无情将对她自己，家庭和社会产生消极的影响，然而一个母亲的善良、包容将产生积极的影响。

Abstract

Motherhood is a recurrent theme in most of Margaret Drabble’s works. In patriarchal society, Motherhood is just treated as a trait of a mother, when she is but a tool to pass on the family’s blood. However, Drabble views motherhood as emotional indispensability in a good relationship of a woman and her children. It is also bliss in the world. With the development of the society and the improvement of the woman’s status, motherhood can be a source of creativity and joy not only for women but for people around them.

Motherhood is usually demonstrated through mother images. There are two kinds of mother images in Drabble’s novels, one is a degraded mother image, the other is a glorified and ideal mother image. In Jerusalem the Golden, these two images are represented by Mrs. Maugham as the former while Mrs. Denham as the latter. Differences in behavior of these two types of mothers deeply affect on themselves, their family and society. The thesis will analyze the different deeds of the mothers in the novel and the consequences caused by these deeds. It is found that Mrs. Maugham treats her family and neighbors especially her daughter relentlessly, and these deeds cause her tense relationship with her daughter and her later lonely and miserable life. It is also found that Mrs. Denham keeps a good balance between her family and her profession, so she makes it both at home and at work. The paper proves that a mother’s improper behavior and ruthless deeds can cast a shadow on herself, family and society, while a mother’s kind and pleasant deeds cause positive influences. Meanwhile, it claims a possibility for women to balance the family and career well. On this basis, the thesis concludes that women need to seek for their careers.
