Implications of China English in Moment in Peking for English Teaching and Learning in China

摘要

中国英语在近年来一直是一个热门话题。尽管如此,但仍有很多人不清楚中国英语和中国式英语,无法把两者区分开。中国英语是语言发展的客观产物,它经常被用来描述一些中国特有的事物,尤其是那些用所谓的标准英语翻译时无法直接表现出中国特色的事物。而与之相对的中国式英语是由于说话者在学习英语作为第二语言时,受到母语影响,而错误使用产生的。二者并不是同一概念。

我主要参考了《京华烟云》这一著作,因为其中使用了大量的中国英语表述。

《京华烟云》这本书在研究中国英语这方面对我们来说几乎是一个完美的范例。因为其中包含大量中国英语的使用。林语堂作为一个文学大家,多年旅居国外,为何要用这种写作手法,而不是用标准英语进行创作,的确值得我们深思。

我还采访了一些大学生,她们基本上可以用英语说出几乎所有的典型西方节日,而对一些中国传统节日,却不知如何用英语表达。即使有一些人还是拥有硕士或者博士学位。

林语堂给了我们一个示范,告诉我们应该如何用英语去展示我们中国特有的东西。因为一些东西一旦翻译成标准的英语,就根本无法显示出我国的文化底蕴。

并且,作品的语言学特色也给了我们国内英语教学以很大的启示,因为就目前的教育情况来看,我们确实对英语过分关注,而忽视了对我们母语的学习。

除此之外,这篇论文还会在中国英语和一些其他英语之间作比较,并且希望我们的中国英语能够在世界范围内被广泛接受,并且能够成为一种具有中国特色的英语。

Abstract

China English is a hot topic in recent years. However, there are also many people who can’t tell the differences between China English and Chinese English. China English is the object product of language development. It’s often used to describe the unique things in China when the so-called Standard English can’t express the features directly, while Chinese English is the product of the speakers who are influenced by their mother tongue and then speak the second language by mistake. 

I mainly consult the book Moment in Peking for there are lots of China English expressions adopted. Moment in Peking is a perfect example for us to research the China English because there are countless China English expressions in the book. Why the author Lin Yutang uses China English instead of Standard English requires our deep thoughts.

And I also research some college students and find that they can express almost all of the typical foreign festivals very well in English, but don’t know how to translate Chinese festivals into English even some of them are graduates and doctors.

It’s really a pity. We all strive to learn the Standard English and imitate the perfect pronunciation. In China, many of parents ask children to learn English very well. In their mind, English is much more important than Chinese. So I think through my thesis, I can raise people’s awareness of learning English and we can make some differences to our English teaching in China.

Lin Yutang, a great linguist, gives us a model to express China’s unique things, because when things are translated into English it can not show our culture.

Besides, the thesis will make a comparison between China English and other Englishes, and hope that China English can be accepted world widely and then become a special kind of English.
