The Comparative Study on Lin Shu’ s and Ezra Pound’ s Translations: A Polysystem Theory – based Study

摘要

文章旨在研究林纾和庞德的翻译对比。林、庞的翻方式和翻译作品一直以来受到两极分化的评价。一方面，译者林、庞不通外语，他们的作品与原文出入较大，违背了传统翻译理论要求的“忠实”原则和“对等”的要求，溶入较多的创作性成分，而非语言形式上的简单对等。另一方面，二人运用自己高超的翻译技巧和丰富的知识使得其翻译作品广受欢迎。当代西方翻译研究最显著的发展之一就是加强重视文化层面对翻译的影响，探讨翻译与译入语社会的政治、文化、意识形态等关系，运用新的文化理论对二人的翻译进行新的阐释。在佐哈尔多元系统理论的框架下，以译入语文化为切入点，指出林、庞的翻译动机及翻译策略均受到各自译语文化的制约和影响。在具体翻译过程中，林、庞译作又因译语文化的诗学观、意识形态和赞助人等因素而做出必要的变形，从而认识到林、庞误译的历史必然性和合理性。

Abstract

This thesis is aimed at making a contrastive study of Lin Shu’s and Ezra Pound’s translations. As we all know, Lin and Pound knew very little about foreign languages. According to traditional studies, Lin’s and Pound’s translated works are against the requirements of faithfulness and equivalence in traditional translation theories. In contemporary western translation studies, one of the most remarkable development is more attention is paid to the level of cultural translation. To explore the relationship between translation and the social, political, cultural and ideological conditions of the target language country, useing the new cultural translation theory to interpret Lin Shu and Pound. In the framework of Zohar's polysystem theory, this thesis points out that Lin’s and Pang’s translation motivation and strategies are restricted and impacted by their target language cultures. In the specific process of translation, Lin and Pound made the necessary deformation due to the translation languages’ cultural poetics, ideologies and sponsors, thus realizing the historical inevitability and rationality of Lin’s and Pang’s mistranslation.
