Abstract

Nowadays, EST (English for Science and Technology) plays an increasingly important role in China, in order to carry information and communication all over the world. Consequently, EST translation becomes unprecedentedly necessary. Academic paper, as one kind of EST, requires imperative needs of translation in order to boost the academic exchange among different countries. Based on the translation practice of the cooperative principle in discourse communities and genres: A framework for the use of metadiscourse, the report has discussed Nida’s and Newmark’s translation theories, literal translation and free translation, as well as the translation techniques of long sentences translation, combination and omission and conversion of word classes. Meanwhile, the cooperative principle and metadiscourse strategy proposed by the original authors in the paper have a practical significance in writing.
The report is composed of five chapters. In the introduction part, it introduces the significance of EST and EAP translation, as well as the main content and the features of the research article. In chapter two, it shows the Nida’s and Newmark’s translation theories applied in the translation practice. In chapter three, the paper indicates literal translation and free translation used in the translation practice. In chapter four, combined with the examples, three important translation techniques----long sentence translation, combination and omission, as well as conversion of word classes are introduced. The last chapter is the conclusion part, which is known as translation review, showing findings and reflections.
Through this translation practice, I have firstly learned a lot from the article. Then I have realized that translation is a long and hard process and that there exist many problems in EAP translation in China.

现如今，为了世界范围内知识的传播与交流，科技英语在中国发挥着越来越重要的作用。所以，与之相关的科技英语翻译迎来前所未有的需求。作为其中一类的科技英语，学术论文迫切地需要翻译以便促进不同国家间的学术交流。本报告基于《话语社团中的合作原则和语类：元话语的使用框架》的翻译实践，探讨了奈达和纽马克的翻译理论，直译和意译，以及长句翻译、省译合译和词性转换的翻译技巧。另外，原作者在论文中提出的合作原则和元话语策略对写作具有指导性意义。
本报告分为五章。引言部分介绍了科技英语翻译的意义、学术论文的特点以及选文的主要内容。在第二章，作者展示了在翻译过程中用到的奈达和纽马克的翻译理论。第三章介绍了直译和意译。第四章则是对长句翻译，省译和合译记忆词性转换三种重要的翻译技巧的介绍。最后是总结部分，主要概括翻译过程中的感悟。
通过这次的翻译实践，首先我学到了选文中所传授的知识，其次我意识到翻译是一个漫长且艰辛的过程。最后，我也意识到在中国，学术英语翻译还存在着诸多问题。
