The Discussions on Domestication and Foreignization in the Translation of English Idioms into Chinese

摘要

本文着重探讨归化和异化这两种翻译策略在英语习语翻译中的选择和运用。本文首先介绍了英语习语定义和特点，然后回顾了异化和归化这两个概念的内涵及其理论基础。本文从文化的角度把英语习语的翻译分成三种类型：对等翻译，半对等翻译和不对等翻译，并分析了异化翻译策略盛行的原因。本文通过实例来分析异化翻译策略和归化翻译策略的优点和缺点。最后笔者提出英语习语翻译应以异化为基础,归化应作为补充策略，由于异化策略在传递异质文化和丰富目的语文化方面有着归化策略不可比拟的优势。但是也不能忽略归化策略，因为在翻译有些民族特色浓厚的英语习语的时候，异化策略并不能让读者很好地理解英语习语的意思，此时就需要用归化翻译策略。同时，必要时仍需结合这两种翻译策略，以便更好地促进两种不同语言之间的文化交流。

Abstract

This paper focuses on the selection and application of domestication and foreignization in the translation of English idioms. First of all, this paper introduces the definition and characteristics of English idioms. Then it reviews the connotations and theoretical basics of foreignization and domestication. It divides the translations of English idioms into three different categories: corresponding translation, semi-corresponding translation and non-corresponding translation. It also analyzes the reason the foreignization is popular. This paper tries to analyze the advantages and disadvantages of foreignization and domestication through different examples of English idioms. Finally the author puts forward that the translation of English idioms should be based on foreignization and domestication should be treated as the supplementary strategy, because foreignization has incomparable advantages over domestication in the transfer of foreign culture and enrichment of the target culture. But the domestication strategy can't be ignored. When translating the English idioms with strong national characteristics, using the foreignization can't make the readers understand the meaning of English idioms well. At this moment, it needs to take the domestication strategy. At the same time, it is necessary to combine two strategies of translation in order to promote the cultural exchange between two different languages.
