Analysis of Translation of Figures of Speech in Two English Versions of Jinling Panci in Hong Lou Meng

摘要

《红楼梦》是中国的四大名著之一，也是中国封建社会的百科全书,

传统文化的集大成者。在国内外受到广泛欢迎，对它的研究与翻译涉及到方方面面。但是，很少将判词作为一个整体，进行翻译和研究。本文将金陵判词作为研究对象，一方面是因为金陵判词在整个小说中具有举足轻重的地位，另一方面是因为该部分的文本特点构成了翻译的特殊困难，因而对其翻译的比较研究在英汉翻译中具有重要意义。本文围绕杨译本和霍译本中金陵判词几种特殊修辞格：隐喻、双关、典故的翻译进行分析，讨论了译者翻译策略选择,分析了译者的文化差异，是导致译文差异的主要原因。

Abstract

Hong Lou Meng is one of the great four classics of China, a volume of encyclopedia of feudal society in China and the epitome of traditional culture. It is popular in China and around the world and associated with every aspect of studies and translations. But, there has been no complete study about Jinling Panci and its translation. That’s why the author of this thesis has chosen this topic for the present thesis.The text characteristics of this part may impose great difficulty on translation and the important role of Jinling Panci plays in the novel is analyzed to show the significance of the study on them. Through comparing and analyzing the translation of the three rhetorical devices,such as metaphor, pun, allusion in JLPC by well-known translators Yang Xianyi and David Hawkes. We can come to a conclusion from this thesis that translator’s cultural differences, translator’s translation strategy selection are the two main factors that result in differences of different translation versions.
