Abstract:

With the increasing maturity of language study, scholars start to evaluate the translation from a broader perspective, instead of being limited to the linguistic level. As intercultural communication plays an unprecedentedly important role in modern society, a study of cultural equivalence in translation bears great significance.
This article focuses on the cultural equivalence in Chinese-English translation including research questions like “what is cultural equivalence?”, and “how can we achieve it in translation?” etc. It aims for a better understanding of cultural equivalence and its important role in translation, as well as finding out an efficient method to realize it.
A case study of Howard Goldblatt’s The Republic of Wine (The English version of Jiu Guo by Mo Yan) is conducted. The author analyses the strategies Howard employed to achieve cultural equivalence in his translation. And a simple evaluation of cultural loss is also provided.
The result shows that more importance should be attached to cultural equivalence in translation, for the purpose of better spreading of native culture in source literature as well as more effective communication among different cultures. This thesis is conducive to readers’ comprehension of cultural equivalence in C-E translation and is expected to make minor contribution to the translation studies, both theoretically and practically.

摘  要:

随着语言研究的不断成熟,人们开始从更广泛的视角来评价翻译,而不仅仅局限于语言层面。由于跨文化交流在现代社会中扮演着前所未有的重要角色,因此研究翻译中的文化对等就具有一定的意义。
本文拟在研究汉英翻译中的文化对等,其中包括“什么是文化对等,怎样来实现文化对等”一些问题。研究目的在于进一步了解文化对等及其在翻译中的重要地位,并试图探寻实现文化对等的有效方法。
文章主要以葛浩文翻译的《酒国》(莫言)为例进行探析。作者分析了葛浩文在《酒国》翻译中为实现文化对等采用的策略,同时对译文中的文化缺失进行了简单评述。
研究结果表明,译者在进行翻译工作时,应更加注重文化对等以促进原作中本土文化更好的传播,以及不同文化之间更有效的交流。本文有助于读者对汉译英中文化对等的理解,并希望在理论及实际意义上为翻译研究尽绵薄之力。
