ABSTRACT

“Faithfulness”, “Expressiveness” and “Elegance” (the Triple Principles) have been regarded as one of the most famous translation criteria since it was published in 1898. At the same time, linguistics has moved forward a lot. The birth of Cognitive Linguistics is one of the products. However, as time passed by, the Triple Principles need to be modified to follow the pace of language development. Subject-Object-Subject Multiple-Interactive Understanding Model adds a new idea to interactions and relationships between subjectivity and objectivity. In this paper, through the analysis of fifteen English translations of On the Height, Subject-Object-Subject Multiple-Interactive Understanding Model will be used in redefining the Triple Principles.

摘  要

严复的“信达雅”自1898年问世以来,就成为翻译界一个广为人知的翻译标准。与此同时,语言学经历了翻天覆地的变化,认知语言学应运而生。随着时间的流逝,严复的翻译标准有待于修改和完善以适应现代社会的需求。王寅教授提出的主客主(SOS)多重互动理解模式对于英文中的主和客之间的联系做出了新的诠释。本论文,通过对于古诗《登高》的15个英文译文的分析,将SOS模式这一理论应用到翻译领域,对严复的“信达雅”做一个新的解释,使之历久弥新,适应时代的潮流。

1.1    The Background
Poetries have been the Chinese culture icon enjoying great popularity in the world. Therefore, to appreciate Tang poetries is to understand Chinese culture. The most important procedure is to translate poetries into English. To wit, the quality of the translation makes great effort in culture communication and spirit spreading.
As globalization moving forward, translators have faced great challenge from the aspect of culture and literary communication for the significant difference in language. A good translator should not only focus on the basic meaning of the poem, but also the unique culture. The uniqueness is where the beauty lies, which may also cause difficulty in translation. The translation criteria are the tool to value whether it is a fantastic translation.
