Abstract:

With the continuous expansion of global integration, the C-E translation of public signs, the city’s cards, get more and more attention of the society from all walks of life. However, the widespread error phenomenon in this field greatly influences the global image of China. Learning the status quo of C-E translation of signs, analyzing and getting rid of the problems and mistakes in our translation can not only build a good bilingual environment but also improve the degree of China’s internationalization. This paper briefly analyzes the main problems in the process of the C-E translation of public signs and proposes the corresponding translation principles and strategies. This article aims to arouse the language workers’ attention, improve the quality of the C-E translation of public signs and make it really play an effective role in information transfer.

摘  要:

随着全球一体化规模的不断扩大,作为城市面貌的汉语公示语的英译越来越受到社会各界的关注。公共标识语的英译错误现象普遍存在,极大地影响了我国对外交流的形象。了解公示语的英译现状,并对其存在问题进行分析,改掉公示语英译中存在的问题和失误,能够营造良好的双语环境,提高中国的国际化程度。本文对当前公示语英译过程中存在的主要问题进行了简要的分析并提出了相应的翻译策略,旨在唤起语言工作者的注意,以期望提高公示语英译的质量,让其真正起到有效传递信息的作用。

1 Introduction
With the development of science and technology and economic globalization, people’s international consciousness is raised greatly and economic cooperation between China and other countries is increasing. Therefore, non-governmental and governmental exchanges have been of frequency, especially when the Olympics, the World Expo, and the APEC meeting held in China's cities. More and more foreigners come to China to travel, study, work and settle down. As a result, English has naturally become an international communication carrier in China. In order to show the image of the internationalization of China as well as to provide convenience for foreigners, many Chinese public signs have been translated into English. But it is found that the various sign translation errors can’t play a good publicity effect role, even they may lead to all kinds of misunderstandings, which may hinder the benign global image building of China to the world. Therefore, it is of great significance to study the C-E translation of public signs to build a positive and friendly image.
