Abstract:

In the past century, film has become the most popular way of entertainment for people. More and more people have chances going to the cinema to appreciate the excellent films. Films should be translated into Chinese so that Chinese audience can understand the content of the film. And Chinese films should bee translated into English too. Of course, the film title also should be translated exquisitely. As an indispensable part of a film, the title has its unique linguistic feature and cultural connotation. The success of the title translation is related to the spread and depth of the film directly. In this thesis, the author makes an analysis of the film title translation from the functional perspective and make an application of several translation strategies, namely, transliteration, literal translation, liberal translation and adaption, which are also illustrated with rich examples under the guidance of the functionalist approach.

经过一个多世纪的发展，电影如今已经成为了一种常见的娱乐方式。而随着全球化的发展，人们有了更多的机会来欣赏制作精良、精彩纷呈的外国电影。为了使中国观众明白整部电影的内容，就需要将电影翻译成中文，这其中就包括了电影片名的翻译。作为影片不可或缺的一部分，电影片名有其独特的语言特色和民族文化内涵，是电影艺术性和票房商业性的集中体现。本文以起源于德国的功能派翻译理论为基础，对电影片名翻译的现象作出了解释，并分析了在目的论指导下，音译、直译、意译及改译几种翻译策略在英语电影片名汉译中的应用。

Introduction

Movie is different from the other novels. It is a modern art. It acts on human's senses, and then has a certain effect through a variety of information dissemination media. so the translation of film titles is also different from other types or forms of literature. But it also belongs to cross-cultural communication activity. From the type of genre, English film title translation belongs to special translation research category. Domestic scholars involved not much in English translation of film titles, but has gradually paid attention to this territory. He Yuemin(1997) points out many problems in western film translation and put forward solution countermeasure. According to functional equivalence theory, He Ying(2001) combines the characteristics of the English film titles, coming up with four value standards to guide translation of film titles and summarizing the main methods. Xiao lujin(2010) analyze E-C film title translation techniques. On this basis, the present paper carries on an extensive collection of original English film title translation of nearly a century, classifying and analyzing them. And had further discussion on principles, methods and standards in English film title translation.
