Abstract

This thesis discusses the following questions: 1) How does Gu Zhenkun’s personality influence his translation of Sanqu poems? 2) How do Gu Zhenkun’s translation strategies reflect translator’s subjectivity in his translation of Sanqu poems? 3) What kind of enlightenments does Gu Zhenkun’s English translation of Sanqu poems give to us? Gu Zhenkun is a very good artist as well as a very good lyricist. Possessing Chinese traditional cultural enrichment and having a strong sense of responsibility to transmit traditional Chinese culture, Gu Zhenkun has his unique views on the translation of Sanqu poems. Gu Zhenkun’s English translation strategies of Sanqu poems are categorized into the strategy in the literary translation of Sanqu poems and the strategy in the free translation of Sanqu poems. In the process of translating Chinese classics, translators need to evaluate the translatability of the works first so that the translator can figure out whether it is necessary to translate it and what kinds of translation methods should be adopted. The conclusion is drawn from the analysis of Gu Zhenkun’s translated works which provides a useful reference to the translation of Chinese classics.

摘 要

本文以“辜正坤元曲翻译的主体性研究”为题,讨论“什么是译者的主体性?,“辜正坤的译者主体性是如何在其元曲英译中体现的?”以及“辜正坤的元曲英译对典籍翻译有何启发或意义?”三个问题。通过讨论,本文得出三点结论:一、译者的主体性是译者在翻译过程中在其翻译作品当中翻译个性体现,译者主体性的核心是审美观和创造力。二、辜正坤的译者主体性的体现可概括为元曲作品选择的主体性和元曲翻译策略的主体性。在元曲作品的选择上,辜正坤依据他的诗歌翻译的可译性理论主要选择可译性高的描述性作品;翻译策略的选择上重要包括直译过程中的策略和意译过程中的翻译策略。三、在翻译中国典籍作品过程中要首先对其可译性进行评估,然后针对可译性的强弱决定翻译方法(直译或意译),文化背景和内涵的翻译是典籍翻译的难关,这种情况下采取意译的方法更实际些。以上三点结论是在对辜正坤的译者主体性进行研究后所得出,对于丰富主体性研究和发展中国典籍翻译具有一定的参考价值。

1 Introduction
   Sanqu is a significant part of Chinese classical literature which receives a gratifying reception in the public. Sanqu poetry has its unique charms: on the one hand, it extended the beautiful and well-sounding rhythms of the Tang poetry and Song Ci poetry. On the other hand, it is relatively freer in form than that of the Tang poetry and Song Ci poetry so that it has better expressed the poets' depression, who had been persecuted by the government in politics. Thus the subjects and themes of the Sanqu poetry are more extensive and are more popular among the public. Gu Zhenkun translated 150 Masterpieces in Yuan Qu-poetry in 2004, which has played a very important role in introducing Chinese classics to the western world. This thesis is going to analyse the subjectivity of Gu Zhenkun's translation of Sanqu poetry.
