Domestication and Foreignization:--- A Case Study of All Men Are Brothers

摘要

本文以赛珍珠翻译的《水浒传》为研究对象，运用举例分析与对比相结合的研究方法，对赛珍珠翻译《水浒传》中使用的翻译方法进行分析、归纳，探究赛珍珠对归化与异化的使用。研究表明：归化与异化并不像大多数人认定的那样，非此即彼、互不相容。归化与异化是平等的、共存的，有着各自适用情况，各有各自的优点。因此，文学翻译过程中，归化策略与异化策略的运用应该视具体情况而定，不可预设。

Abstract

This paper makes a study of All Men Are Brothers translated by the American writer Pearl, using a research method of combining giving examples with contrastive analysis, to analyze and draw a conclusion of the translation methods used by Pearl in the process of translating All Men Are Brothers. Researches show that most of the people would believe that the method of domesticating and foreignizing are incompatible. As a matter of fact, the two are equal and compatible, because they can be used in different situations and have their own advantages. So, in the process of literary translation, the strategy of using domestication or foreignization, should be determined by specific situations instead of being set ahead of time.
